Advances in Crop Improvement by Space Mutagenesis in China

چکیده
Aerospace provides a special environment with strong cosmic radiation, microgravity, weak geomagnetic field and supervacuum, etc., which might affect plant growth and development as well as induce genetic changes of crop seeds. Since 1987, China has been conducting experiments of space mutagenesis for crop improvement by using recoverable satellites and Shenzhou spacecrafts. Shijian-8, the first world satellite specially designed for the space breeding program, was also launched on 9 September 2006. More than 40 new mutant varieties of crops including rice, wheat, cotton, sesame, pepper, tomato and alfalfa developed by space breeding have been officially released in China by far. A novel technique for mutation induction by simulating the space environment factors has also been set up. It was concluded that crop space-induced mutation breading is an effective way to both breed new varieties and enhance genetic diversity.

Unveiling the genetic loci for a panicle developmental trait using genome-wide association study in rice
Panicle size has a high correlation with grain yield in rice. There is a bottleneck to identify the additional quantitative trait loci (QTL) for panicle size due to the conventional traits used for QTL mapping. To identify more genetic loci for panicle size, a panicle developmental trait (LNTB, the length from panicle neck-knot to the first primary branch in the rachis) related to panicle size ...

The discoveries during the late 1920s that the genetic material is amenable to changes excited geneticists who saw new opportunities for both basic and practical applications. During the 1950s, induced mutagenesis was widely pursued in the US, Europe, Japan and China. In India, Swaminathan and his team at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi initiated a major programme on mutag...

Himalayas, are among the areas most vulnerable to global warming, however, little is knownabout warming impacts on the crops. Therefore, the actual affects of anticipated warming onwinter wheat were tested in Tibet, China. During the period 1988-2012, Tibet region hasexperienced a large increase in daily mean, minimum and maximum temperatures during wheatgrowing seasons by 0.50, 0.67 and 0.51 o...
متن کاملMutation discovery for crop improvement.
Increasing crop yields to ensure food security is a major challenge. Mutagenesis is an important tool in crop improvement and is free of the regulatory restrictions imposed on genetically modified organisms. The forward genetic approach enables the identification of improved or novel phenotypes that can be exploited in conventional breeding programmes. Powerful reverse genetic strategies that a...

Habitat disturbance affects numerous ecosystem components and processes, but its effect on continuous soybean system is less available. Soybean was seeded following six preceding crops, including grain soybean (Glycine max L. Merill.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), corn (Zea mays L.) and hemp (Cannabis Satia L.), on a Mollisol ...
